What do the data tell us about the cost of living in Bolivia?

The worrying picture painted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with a projected inflation rate of 15.8% in Bolivia in 2025, is reflected in the cost of living overview outlined in the WageIndicator quarterly collection for gig workers and freelancers.

With the exception of some work-related items, most prices have gone up. If we don't take into account the smallest increases, +0.25% for data plans and +0.5% for fuel, other prices have gone up across the board:

  • +6.45% for cars;
  • +13.47% for motorcycle insurance;
  • +17.92% for laptops;
  • +23.94% for wifi;
  • and a staggering +33.47% for mobile phones, which are essential for both local platform workers (delivery staff, drivers, cleaners) and remote freelancers.

Platform workers and freelancers in Bolivia face tough choices as rising work-related costs squeeze earnings and their financial security.

Work-related costs are often overlooked when it comes to the platform economy and non-standard work, but they are a crucial element to consider. "You might think that a self-employed or platform worker earns more than an employee, but if you don't look at these costs, the conclusion is misleading," explains Daniela Ceccon, Data Director.

That's why WageIndicator developed the Living Tariff concept to answer the question: what is the right amount for a gig worker or a freelancer to negotiate, charge and earn in order to live well?
