January 2025 - US - Massachusetts Ride-Hailing Drivers Win Unionizing Rights, but Battle with Companies Looms

In November 2024, ride-hailing drivers in Massachusetts won the right to unionise through a statewide ballot initiative. The real battle with the companies is about to begin. At the moment, Uber and Lyft are raising concerns about 'technical issues'.

If the ballot initiative survives to 2026, it could establish a first-of-its-kind collective bargaining system for ride-hailing drivers, administered by a state agency.

If it fails, the experiment could end before it begins, and contract drivers' right to unionise could be lost.
