October 2024 - Malta - Malta Sees 587-Worker Drop in Food Courier Sector Following Work Permit Freeze

Between July and October 2024, the number of third-country nationals working in Malta's Y-plate and food courier sectors decreased by 587. This followed a decision by JobsPlus, Malta’s employment agency, to stop approving new work permits for these sectors due to an oversupply of workers. The decision, made in July after evaluating labor market data, concluded that additional foreign workers were no longer needed. No new third-country nationals have been allowed to work in these roles since July 1st. While new permits are still being rejected for workers outside Malta, some part-time permits will be issued to full-time employees already in the country. This policy will continue until further notice.
