Delivery drivers in Seattle have alleged that Uber Eats is underpaying them, failing to meet the city’s minimum wage requirements for gig workers.
The ordinance, enacted in 2022, took effect this January. It establishes a minimum wage for gig workers, who are typically excluded from state and federal labor protections, such as minimum wage requirements, due to their classification as independent contractors.
Under Seattle’s rule, gig workers must be paid at least $0.44 per minute and $0.74 per mile, with a minimum of $5 per offer. The law also mandates that companies provide transparent payment records and safeguards workers by prohibiting penalties for limiting availability or declining orders.
