Massachusetts ride-hailing drivers secured the right to unionize through a statewide ballot initiative.
The initiative will give drivers for apps like Uber and Lyft the ability to form unions that have collective bargaining power — while still being classified as independent contractors.
The practice, called sectoral bargaining, allows workers to unionize as an industry— in this case, ride-hailing drivers— rather than as employees of individual companies. However, this initiative does not extend protections to food delivery drivers.
