The California Supreme Court has ruled that app-based ride-sharing and delivery service drivers, such as those for Uber and Lyft, can continue to be treated as independent contractors rather than employees.
The ruling upholds Proposition 22, a law approved by voters in 2020, and ends a long-running legal battle between unions and tech companies.
App-based drivers are excluded from California workers' compensation laws, which generally apply to employees.
