Just Eat is facing criticism in Italy for using an algorithm to penalize delivery riders for low performance.
According to the unions, the algorithm imposes unrealistic delivery expectations without considering real-world challenges like traffic and weather. For instance, a rider was fined for not maintaining a speed that would be expected of a professional cyclist.
The unions argue that such penalties ignore the safety and well-being of workers, especially during extreme weather conditions, and force them to accept difficult deliveries under pressure.
Just Eat, however, claims that the sanctions were only applied to a small percentage of riders who consistently failed to meet expectations despite repeated attempts at dialogue.
