The Court of Milan declared the dismissals of 4,000 Uber Eats riders "illegitimate." After exiting the country in June 2023, the company will be forced to start a new phase of consultations with unions.
The judge explained that a multinational company intending to fire fifty or more workers due to cessation of operations must communicate its decision at least 180 days in advance.
The information must also be delivered to trade unions and the National Agency for Labor Policies in written form.
On the contrary, Uber Eats communicated its decision to leave the country via email without discussing the procedure with union representatives. For this reason, the judge condemned its behavior as anti-union.
