March 2023 - US - Illinois House passes legislation holding ride-hailing services liable for passenger safety

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would treat ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft as “common carriers,” opening them up to the same level of liability as other forms of public transportation.

The Illinois House of Representatives passed legislation that would hold ride-hailing services liable in the event that someone is injured or attacked during a trip.

The bill establishes the duty of care on Lyft and Uber. Some argued the proposal is attacking the free market.

The legislation now heads to the Illinois Senate for further consideration. Shall the measure pass the Senate, the bill's amendment will head to the desk of Gov. Pritzker to sign into law.
