March 2023 - The Netherlands - Uber's 'independent study' on drivers' earnings turns on the debate

After a series of fatal accidents, Uber has commissioned the Maastricht University to publish an “independent study” on the earnings of its drivers in the Netherlands.

It was found that Amsterdam taxi drivers who perform rides under the Uber flag earn an average of about 32.32 euros per hour gross.

According to Uber, driver earnings have increased by 41 percent since the Corona pandemic.

However, various parties have questioned this research. The FNV union said that data is not verifiable, because the figures do not take take into account the costs that the drivers themselves bear.

The principal investigator has defended the study: "I haven't seen any crazy things. I don't feel like I've been fooled by Uber. (...) You have to deduct taxes, premiums, and savings for retirement, if you want to find out how much an Uber driver actually receives in income."
