Glovo - WageIndicator & Fairwork

What type of innovation?
In april 2021 WageIndicator Foundation struck a deal with Glovo, so that the delivery platform can use WageIndicator's Living Wage Database to pay their riders fair earnings. It's one of the policies and social benefits for couriers included in the 'Couriers Pledge' for which Glovo consulted the Fairwork Project.


Advantages for workers
Based on all data collected by WageIndicator, Glovo can make proper comparisons of earnings and expenses to arrive at fair earnings country by country and city by city.

Coomappa & Bibi Mob - Brazil

What type of innovation?
It's a taxi platform cooperative in Araraquara (São Paul), founded to assist drivers facing new challenges such as high fuel prices. In January 2022, Coomappa launched Bibi Mob, a transport app freely available for both Android and iOS that allows anyone to become a taxi driver, motorcycle taxi driver, or food delivery courier.

Bibi Mob offers a panic button feature that helps keep drivers safe.
With an option for women to request female drivers, the app is also looking out for the safety of all users.
Coomappa only takes 5 percent of the revenue, with the rest going to the drivers. Not only is this great for drivers, but it also helps to support the local economy in Araraquara.
Drivers pay a monthly co-op membership fee of R$50, or about 10 US dollars. In return, Coomappa not only provides the digital platform, but it also gives discounts based on its close relationships with local businesses.
Coomappa also grants its drivers a variety of other benefits, such as insurance discounts and legal services.

Hogaru - Colombia

What type of innovation?

Hogaru is a Colombian domestic service platform that hires domestic workers to then assign them to clients. It takes responsibility in selecting and training its workers. The legal contract that the workers sign guarantees labour rights established by the Colombian domestic work Law 1788 of 2016.

Advantages for workers

  • In 2021 Hogarú guaranteed workers are paid at least the local minimum wage after costs.
  • Hogarú also pays a transport allowance which includes cost of travelling between shifts.
  • Additionally, Hogarú covers social security as employer, which includes accident insurance, pension and compensation funds, and severance pay.
  • Hogarú demonstrated a set of measures and policies to mitigate task-specific risks. This includes safety training, social security payment, labour insurance and personal protective equipment.
  • Hogarú has created different channels for workers to communicate with human representatives of the platform’s human resources team. These representatives are called “godmothers” and not only help workers solve problems with clients and services, among others, but also pay attention to their personal situations that may require additional help.

Fundis - Kenya

What type of innovation?

FUNDIS is a mobile-based platform in Kenya that connects "fixers" (carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and so on) to customers. A "fundi" (fixer) can be trained not only on how the platform works but also on basic digital literacy (how to use a smartphone, social media training) and soft skills (language, etiquette, presentation and tips on how to ask questions, pay attention to details, take notes, etc). FUNDIS has developed a "fixers guide" on which the training is based. The guide is updated frequently in response to feedback from both fixers and customers.

Advantages for workers
Thanks to the training, workers improve the quality of their work, bring in more jobs, and bridge the gap between informal and formal work. They become more independent, digitally savvy, professional fixers.

ShapShap - Nigeria

What type of innovation?
ShapShap, a logistics and delivery company in Nigeria, requires that all riders pass an initial in-person training (how to communicate with customers, how to stay safe, etc). The company also developed a COVID-19 specific training about contactless deliveries, wearing masks, and social distancing.

Advantages for workers
Workers benefit from platform-led upskilling: they had to complete a set of wellness and health reminders in the app, such as making sure they are well-rested, and have observed proper hygiene and followed COVID-19 compliance advice.

Gojek - Singapore

What type of innovation?
The mission of this multi-services platform (from transportation to food delivery) is to create simple, flexible and affordable insurance for freelancers. In particular thanks to the partnership with Gigacover, a Singapore-based insurance technology company focused on the protection needs of freelancers, Gojek has launched an insurance scheme that covers all its driver-partners - the most extensive earnings protection coverage offered to private-hire drivers in Singapore.
Advantages for workers
Driver-partners enjoy medical leave of up to 21 days and hospitalisation leave of up to 84 days.
All Gojek driver-partners can enjoy a standard earnings protection coverage of $80 per day. To qualify for the coverage, driver-partners need only to pay a single, subsidised monthly rate to Gigacover, depending on their age. Top active driver-partners* will enjoy free coverage paid for by Gojek on a quarterly basis.
In partnership with Esso and DBS, the platform brings drivers flexibility and lowered everyday driving costs – they can save up to 33.4% at 62 Esso stations islandwide.
The partnership with Doctor Anywhere – an on-demand video consultation platform – let drivers skip get connected to certified doctors.

GigCV - the Netherlands

What type of innovation?
A digital “passport” to make it possible for platform workers to export data on their experiences and use this reputation data in finding new gigs through other platforms or employment otherwise. The goal is to launch the standard with these six platforms in December this year and then open the standard to everyone.

Data portability is useful for workers, when they need to get started as quickly as possible on a new platform: GigCV serves as proof of their work experience and skills.

Uber - UK and the Netherlands

What type of innovation?
During the pandemic Uber introduced an opportunity for their taxi drivers to export a PDF document with their work performance (average rating of the last 500 trips, top 5 compliments, skills needed for taxi driving and total amount of trips). Temp agency Adecco has set up a landing page for Uber drivers where they can apply and upload this document.

Advantages for workers
The PDF performance overview give the gig workers the recognition for the services they have provided through the Uber app: it's a quite important progress speaking about data portability for gig workers (in order to facilitate the transfer from one "employer" to another, improve labor mobility and let the workers to own their online reputation).

Agreement Uber and Transport Workers' Union - AUSTRALIA

Type of Innovation

Agreement on proposed employment standards and benefits ahead of expected new gig economy regulation. The union and Uber have also agreed to jointly support the creation of a new independent government-funded regulatory body to create industry-wide standards for ride share and food delivery gig workers following months of negotiations.

Advantages for workers

The body will be responsible for creating minimum and transparent enforceable earnings, benefits and conditions for people who work on the ride-hailing platform. The body will also act as a means for resolving disputes over platform employment issues, such as when a worker’s account is deactivated.

The Black Ride - MOU - Ghana

Type of Innovation

The Black Ride, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with various digital driver unions in the country to promote a safe and fair working environment for digital drivers.

Drivers would be given a fixed service charge per ride given, irrespective of the distance and the amount involved, as well as receive an estimated charge of the trip and the drop-off location of the client before starting the ride.
The app also gave drivers the chance to do street picks and still receive price estimates.
