October 2021 - Colombia - 'Apps' like Uber and Rappi contribute nearly $ 2 billion annually to the economy

Digital platforms, such as Uber, Didi, Beat, Cabify, Rappi or iFood, “played a fundamental role in the pandemic”, since “they facilitated the distribution of goods and services during the quarantines and constituted an alternative source of resources for thousands of workers who were unemployed ”.

This is how the researchers from Fedesarrollo (Foundation for Higher Education and Development) analyze it, which has just published the research “Digital platforms and contributions to social security. The case of Colombia before and during the pandemic ”.

The analysis, financed by the Colombian platform association, Alianza IN, calculated that digital platforms participate in 0.23% of GDP (calculation based on the salaries of workers and the increase in sales of allied companies) —that is, close to $ 2 trillion. In addition, it generate other “positive externalities” on users, allies (for example, restaurants) and the people who work through these platforms (drivers and domiciliary).
